Gold and Political Reform
The discovery of gold changed the face of Western Australian society forever. The Colony grew wealthy, the population increased rapidly and the new arrivals pressed for a widening of the franchise.
The long trek to and from the gold fields
Transportation to the eastern gold fields in the early 1890s was laborious, uncomfortable and slow.  Camels were used to ferry men and supplies in harsh conditions.

"In Perth and Fremantle everyone seems to be either carrying tents, picks, shovels, and dishes, or otherwise preparing for the road."

West Australian, 21 September 1893
Bayley Street, Coolgardie. 1890
The wide streets were designed to allow the camel trains to turn.
