The State Constitution The collection of laws which govern our political system in Western Australia. |
Today, the State Constitution still exists and authorises the activities of the State Government. When we speak of the State's Constitution, we refer to the original Constitution Act of 1889 and subsequent amendments, including the Federal Constitution.
Our State Constitution is still under discussion and suggestions for change continue to emerge - as they should - if Western Australia is to continue to move with the times.
The people of this state have democratic power, and our system of people-based government depends on all of us becoming involved in issues and debates. There has been lively debate in the newspapers. Some of the suggestions made would involve changes to our State Constitution. You, as a voter, can influence some aspects of future changes to our State Constitution because, since 1978, some changes have to be approved by the people at a Referendum. Also the people you elect to Parliament can, as your elected representatives, decide to make other changes to the Constitution on your behalf.
 |
| The debate surrounding the constitution is still alive and well. |
And that is why we hold regular State elections, so that you can make changes in Government that are relevant to you. As a citizen of Western Australia, you can vote and influence the State's future. Our State Our Future Our Responsibility.
This is the end of this Constitutional Centre Exhibition.
