About The Constitutional Centre

The Constitutional Centre of Western Australia was established to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about how our political system works and how to participate in it more fully.

The Centre is the only complex of its kind in Australia and provides information, a program of exhibitions, seminars and events. It gives Western Australians the opportunity to learn about our federal system of State and Commonwealth government and to explore current issues.

The Centre is housed in the beautifully restored heritage building that was once the old Hale School. It is set in spacious grounds, close to Parliament House, on the corner of Havelock Street and Parliament Place, in West Perth. It has exhibition and seminar facilities, a theatrette, and a parliamentary-style debating chamber.

Visitor parking is available in the Centre car park off Havelock Street. There also is metered parking on Havelock Street and Parliament Place, and on week days the Red CAT bus stops across the road from the Centre on the corner of Ord and Havelock Streets.

The Centre has permanent displays on the Constitution, aspects of citizenship and history relating to governance. Visitors are welcome to view these during opening hours but a booking is essential. Groups may arrange for guided programs with our education staff. There are also special programs to meet the needs of primary and secondary school groups.

The Centre is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and is closed weekends and public holidays, with the exception of advertised special events.

The Electoral Education Centre also operates programs from the Centre.

Electoral Education

Located in the same complex, visit the Electoral Education Centre and view their displays. Groups are able to take part in interactive programs which allow them to cast their vote, find out more about the origins of democracy and work out what preferential voting is really about! The Electoral Education Centre will walk you through all the activities that you undertake to have your say on election day. An audiovisual presentation, interactive displays and mock elections make the election process come alive.
